Long Beach Women Win NCAA Volleyball Title
Cal State Long Beach won its first NCAA Division I women’s volleyball championship Saturday night at Honolulu with a 15-12, 15-0, 15-6 victory over Nebraska.
The fourth-ranked 49ers (32-5) was led by senior outside hitter Tara Cross, who had 20 kills and nine digs. Cross, the co-NCAA player of the year, set a tournament record for kills with 125 in five matches. The former mark of 113 kills was set last season by Hawaii’s Teee Williams-Sanders.
The 15-0 game was the first shutout in championship final history, and only the second ever in the NCAA tournament.
Fifth-ranked Nebraska finished 29-4.
