SPORTSCOPE : Southwest Scholarship Named for Football Player Who Died at Game

A scholarship in memory of Dorsey High School football player Kevin Copeland has been established at Southwest College.

Copeland, 17, collapsed on the sidelines and died of a heart attack during a game at San Pedro on Oct. 6. The scholarship was established by the Baldwin Hills Youth Football Assn. and will assist athletes at Southwest. Copeland, considered one of the top prep wide receivers in Southern California, was recently awarded an honorary position on the All-Pacific League football team by league coaches.

Westchester resident Pat Sullivan rallied with a hole-in-one on the 158-yard, par-three eighth hole at the Penmar nine-hole golf course and finished with a par 33. Sullivan, 65, used an eight-iron for the ace, according to course starter Stan Funk. Inja Kim of Torrance hit a six-iron shot for a hole-in-one recently on the 144-yard, par-three eighth hole at Harbor Park.

Helen Reagin of Ladera Heights won the 36-hole Penmar Women’s Golf Championship. She posted a 174 for a one-stroke victory.

The Fabela Chavez Boxing Center of Carson will present youth boxing Saturday afternoon at 1. Admission is free. The center is at 424 1/2 E. Carson.

Registration for the city of Carson’s winter softball leagues ends Dec. 22 . The fee is $305 per local team and $355 for non-resident teams. Play begins in January. Call 830-7600.

Robbie Meistrell, president of the Hermosa Beach-based Professional Surfing Assn. of America, has announced that prize money on the group’s 11-event 1990 surfing and bodyboarding tour has been increased to a minimum of $40,000 per event. Dodger Manager Tommy Lasorda will be the keynote speaker Monday night at a dinner to start a $1 million fund-raising effort for Eastview Little League of San Pedro, which advanced to the Little League World Series last summer. The league needs the funds to build a facility on 15 acres at North Gaffey Street near Capitol Drive. Currently, Eastview plays its games on nearby fields. Tickets for the dinner cost $50.
