NAMES IN THE NEWS : Tabloid Admits Error in Trying to Link Schwarzenegger to Nazis
LONDON — American actor and bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzenegger today accepted damages and an apology from a British newspaper that had alleged he held fervent Nazi views and was a secret admirer of Adolf Hitler.
Austrian-born Schwarzenegger, whose hit films include “Conan the Barbarian” and “Terminator,” sued The News of the World over an article last February entitled “Hollywood Star’s Nazi Secret.”
Schwarzenegger’s lawyer James Price told a judge that News Group Newspapers, the publishers, now accepted there was no truth in the allegations.
In addition to paying undisclosed damages and legal costs, the company also agreed in the out-of-court settlement never to repeat the allegations.
Robert Clinton, representing the News of the World, said the paper deeply regretted the damage and distress caused.
“My clients accept that Mr. Schwarzenegger has never espoused Nazi and anti-Semitic views and has never been an admirer of Adolf Hitler and what he and his evil regime represent,” he said.
