From Times Wire Services
SACRAMENTO — Hunters legally killed an estimated 28,741 deer in California in 1989, up 12.7% from 1988, the state Department of Fish and Game estimated today.
The number of deer shot illegally by poachers probably was about three times as great, said department spokesman Lanny Clavecilla. Animal biologists estimate the annual illegal deer kill in California at between 70,000 and 75,000 animals.
