Duke Defense Eyes Howell, Texas Tech in All American
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — When in high school, John Howell nicknamed himself “Hollywood” because he wanted to be a star.
The Duke linebacker said he can shine today if he and the Blue Devil defense can shut down running back James Gray of 24th-ranked Texas Tech (8-3) in the All American Bowl.
Howell said Gray, the nation’s fifth-leading rusher with 1,509 yards, has quick moves and great cutback ability. “It will be a defensive showdown for Duke,” Howell said.
After missing 20th-ranked Duke’s first six games with a knee injury, Howell had 45 tackles in the next five games.
Duke (8-3) is in a bowl for the first time in 20 years.
