The World Boxing Council has rejected Sugar Ray Leonard’s attempt to give up his super-middleweight title.
“I received Leonard’s resignation, but I did not accept it,” WBC President Jose Sulaiman said in a telephone interview from Mexico City.
A letter from Mike Trainer, Leonard’s lawyer, said the boxer was resigning the title because other boxers were pressuring Sulaiman to give them a chance at the crown. The letter said Leonard was not quitting boxing.
Leonard retained the title Dec. 7 in Las Vegas, winning a decision over Roberto Duran in a 12-round fight.
