P.M. BRIEFING : Varig of Brazil Orders 15 737 Jetliners From the Boeing Co.

The Boeing Co. said today that Varig of Brazil, the largest airline in South America, has ordered 15 737-300 jetliners worth a total of about $450 million.

Boeing said Varig is acquiring the new-generation short-range jets for both fleet replacement and expansion.

The 737s will seat 132 passengers in a single-class configuration, and will be powered by CFM56-3B2 engines built by CFM International, a joint venture between General Electric and SNECMA of France.

The purchase will bring Varig’s total fleet of owned and leased 737-300s to 25.
