Illinois Law Revives Riverboat Gambling

ALTON, Ill. —
Gov. James R. Thompson signed legislation Wednesday to allow riverboat gambling on the Mississippi and Illinois rivers beginning next year.
The gambling “is not designed to make money for the state,” Thompson said in a statement, “but rather, to help local economies by stimulating tourism and economic development revenues for the municipalities that want it.”
The governor also appointed a five-member gaming board to oversee the floating casinos.
