East Bloc Roadblock

To Jack Adler’s article on Eastern Bloc countries (“Consumer Report,” Jan. 21) I’d like to add that on my recent trip to Poland I failed to register my jewelry, which was minimal (two rings and a gold necklace), and on my departure they tried to take those things away from me, believing that they were bought in Poland. They then wanted me to pay heavy customs tax on the items, which weren’t worth as much as the tax. It is extremely important, even if it’s just fashion jewelry, to register it upon arrival and then present the registration slip upon departure. Otherwise it is a lot of trouble.
