A 43-year-old San Fernando Valley dentist was killed and her three children were injured Sunday when a pickup truck careened across a rural highway in North County and struck their van head on, the California Highway Patrol said.
Mary Penn was pronounced dead at the scene on California 79 in Warner Springs. Her children, whom the CHP declined to identify, were flown by helicopter to two hospitals. A 16-year-old boy was listed in serious condition Sunday night at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido. At Children’s Hospital in San Diego, a 5-year-old boy was listed in critical condition and a 2-year-old girl was reported in serious condition.
The CHP said Penn’s van was northbound on the highway. Both vehicles overturned in the collision, which occurred at 1:50 p.m. about three miles south of Chihuahua Valley Road.
The driver of the pickup, whose name had not been released, was not injured. The accident is under investigation.
