ANAHEIM — La Mirada High School’s Charlie Cardon scored only two points, but his steal and lay-in with 2:40 left to play helped the Matadors to a 51-50 victory over Kennedy in a Southern Section 4-A boys’ playoff game Tuesday at Western.
Cardon’s basket gave La Mirada a 51-48 lead. Kennedy pulled to within one point when Billy Williams had a steal and basket with 38 seconds left. The Fighting Irish had a chance to win after La Mirada missed the front end of a one-and-one with 13 seconds left. Kennedy worked the ball to Jim Barker, who missed an 18-footer as time ran out.
Brian Tiller led La Mirada (19-8) with 17 points and Richard Law had 11.
Barker scored 14 points, including 10 of 15 free throws, for Kennedy (18-7), which had its 15-game winning streak stopped.
