Communist Gus Hall
Stephen Braun’s profile of Hall was most revealing and entertaining. As Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union begin to unravel, Hall holds steadfast to his Marxian fantasies, refusing to own up to communism’s failure.
Dialectical materialism’s true believers may chalk up Communist Bloc upheavals to “gadget socialism,” but the truth is the masses only seek what has been denied them: “the pursuit of happiness,” i.e., to lead their lives unimpeded by totalitarian state planners.
As the Eastern world convulses with change, let us hope we in the West grasp the lessons taught. Here at home it is said the decrease in East-West tensions will render a “peace dividend.” This windfall should be forwarded to the nation’s taxpayers and not state planners.
