THE SIDELINES : ’89 Holiday Bowl Richest Ever

SAN DIEGO — Penn State and Brigham Young University each received more than $1 million from the Holiday Bowl, the largest payout in the bowl’s 12-year history.
The Nittany Lions defeated BYU, 50-39, in the Dec. 29 game at San Diego’s Jack Murphy Stadium. Fifteen Holiday Bowl records were set during the contest.
The total payout of $2,018,076 was divided evenly between the schools for checks of $1,009,038.
The bowl’s previous highest team payout was in 1988, when Oklahoma State and Wyoming each received $907,613.
