BASEBALL
Moorpark 12, Pierce 7--Mike Suarez hit his fifth home run and doubled for host Moorpark in a WSC win.
Don Smith added his second home run for Moorpark.
Joe Cascione hit his first home run and drove in four runs and Pat Fairly hit his second home run for Pierce.
Valley 5, Santa Barbara 3--Steve Trainor, a freshman from Burbank High, struck out six and scattered five hits to lift Valley in a WSC opener.
The Monarchs (5-9-2, 1-0) scored all five runs in the sixth. E.J. Pape had a bases-loaded single to drive in two, Steve Ross and Chad Ratliff walked in two more, and Chris Greenamyer hit a sacrifice fly to bring home the fifth. Five Valley batters walked in the decisive inning.
SOFTBALL
El Camino 6, Moorpark 2--Jamie Hagen (0-1) went the distance in a losing effort for Moorpark in a Bakersfield tournament game.
TENNIS
Sports Chalet Invitational--Pierce’s Al Martinez and Jason Gary advanced to today’s final round of singles play at Golden West.
Martinez and Gary also teamed to advance to today’s doubles final.
TRACK
Russell Jenkins and Kim Young of Cal State Northridge each won a pair of hurdles races in a triple-dual meet at UC Irvine.
Jenkins won the 110-meter highs in 15.01 seconds and the 400-meter intermediates in 54.60 while Young won the women’s 100-meter low hurdles in 14.37 and the 400-meter intermediates in 1:05.52.
Stanford won both the men’s and women’s meets with CSUN second and Irvine in both divisions.
The Cardinal men scored 78 points, 21.5 points more than Northridge, while the Stanford women had 75 points to Northridge’s 57.
