PREP BASKETBALL: SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA REGIONAL TOURNAMENT : OTHER GAMES : Long Beach Poly Wins in Overtime

Long Beach Poly scored eight points in the last 40 seconds of regulation play and then outscored Loyola, 8-2, in overtime, en route to a 78-72 victory in the opening round of the boys’ State Division I high school basketball tournament at Long Beach City College Tuesday night.

Melvin Jones led top-seeded Poly (27-2) with 20 points and Willie McGinest added 15 points and seven rebounds. Loyola (23-5), the 5-A Division runner-up, was led by Eric Jones, who scored 21 points.

Manual Arts 73, Bakersfield 72--Marcell Capers scored 15 points and Kevin Beal and William Celestine added 14 apiece to lead the City 4-A champion Toilers (27-3) past Bakersfield in Division I action at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Brian Oliver led Bakersfield (26-4) with 22 points.

Santa Clara 67, Imperial 37--Shon Tarver scored 30 points, had 10 rebounds, four steals and three assists in only three quarters to lead the Saints past the Tigers at Santa Clara in boys’ Division IV action. Tarver scored 21 points in the first half, as Santa Clara (25-0), the defending Division IV champion, opened up a 32-11 halftime lead.

Artesia 65, Visalia Golden West 36--Ed O’Bannon scored 30 points and Chris Thompson added 10 to lead the Division II top-seeded Pioneers at Artesia.

In girls action:

Washington 47, Lynwood 46--Sophomore center Charisse Sampson scored eight of the second-seeded Generals’ 11 points in the fourth quarter to lead Washington past the Knights in Division I action at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

City 4-A champion Washington (28-3), which played without standout senior guard Detra Lockhart, was led by Sampson, who scored 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Lynwood (23-3), the Southern Section 5-AA runner-up, was led by Nicole Sanders, who scored 18 points.
