THE SIDELINES : Teen Leaps 81 1/2 Meters at Zao

ZAO, Japan — Andreas Goldberger, a 17-year-old Austrian high school student, soared to the day’s longest ski jump of 81.5 meters on his first try today to win the 70-meter normal hill event of the FIS International Zao Jump competition.
Goldberger leaped 73 meters on his second jump, earning 193.9 points to beat Japan’s Shinichi Tanaka by 6.1 points.
Tanaka collected 187.8 points with jumps of 76.5 meters and 75 meters.
Reiichi Mikata of Japan placed third with jumps of 75 meters and 76 meters for 186.7 points.
