Halt to Malathion Spraying Urged
By a 2-1 vote Monday night, the Lomita City Council passed a resolution asking the state to stop aerial spraying of malathion in the Los Angeles area until more health studies on the insecticide are performed.
Similar resolutions have been passed by the city councils of Los Angeles and Monterey Park, demanding that the state perform new studies on malathion, create a public panel to monitor spraying and investigate alternative methods of destroying the Medfly.
Rich Colbary, a former Lomita parks and recreation commissioner, first brought the issue before the council last month. On Monday, Councilman Robert Hargrave said Lomita must take a stand before the Medfly becomes a threat to the city.
