BOYS’ BASKETBALL : SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Oxnard Santa Clara 91, Santa Maria St. Joseph 65--Shon Tarver had 40 points, 15 rebounds and seven assists to lead the Saints to their 44th consecutive victory and the Regional Division IV championship at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Santa Clara (27-0), the defending State Division IV champion, plays Northern titlist Travis AFB Vanden, a 64-58 winner over Mill Valley Tamalpais, in Friday’s state championship game at Oakland.
After St. Joseph (22-8) took its only lead of the game, 17-16, to begin the second quarter, the Saints made 10 consecutive shots and opened a 38-19 lead.
“At that point of the game, our defense took over,” Santa Clara Coach Lou Cvijanovich said. “This team is very explosive, and I think we can play with anyone in the state.”
The 6-foot-5 Tarver had 27 points and 10 rebounds at halftime.
