NATION : 5 Children Die in Wisconsin Fire
MADISON, Wis. — A fire broke out in a low-income apartment complex early today and killed five children in their bedrooms, authorities said.
The blaze started around 2:30 a.m. in a unit at the Somerset Circle apartment complex in the town of Madison, which is just south of the city of Madison.
“When our units arrived on the scene, flames were emanating from the front and back windows, the downstairs was pretty much engulfed. The children were trapped upstairs,” said George Burrowbridge, town Fire Department dispatcher.
He said the bodies of the five children were found in their bedrooms. Fire Chief Keith Tveit listed their ages as 5 months, 1, 2, 5 and 9. Three were boys and two were girls.
There was speculation that the fire began downstairs in the kitchen, but Burrowbridge said that has not been confirmed.
