WORLD IN BRIEF : SOUTH AFRICA : Mandela Calls for Tougher Sanctions

Black nationalist leader Nelson R. Mandela urged tougher sanctions against South Africa and the breaking of diplomatic relations with Pretoria in order to speed democratic changes in his country. Mandela make his remarks at a press conference in Stockholm, and Sweden, like many European countries, retains diplomatic ties to South Africa. Sweden was the last leg of Mandela’s first trip outside South Africa since he was freed last month after 27 years in prison.
