WORLD IN BRIEF : EL SALVADOR : Government Cheers Rebel Peace Offer

El Salvador’s U.S.-backed government welcomed an offer by leftist rebels to halt attacks affecting civilians and said it is ready to renew peace talks. A government spokesman gave no date for the possible resumption of talks, broken off last October before the start of a large rebel offensive that left 2,000 people dead.
