PREP TRACK ROUNDUP : Matsumoto Runs Mater Dei Past St. Paul
Senior Jeff Matsumoto ran a total 3 3/4 miles and won four events to lead Mater Dei High School to a 105-18 victory over St. Paul in an Angelus League boys’ track meet Thursday at St. Paul.
Matsumoto won the 800 yards in 2 minutes, and the mile in 4:46. He also won the two-mile race and anchored the mile relay team.
In nonleague boys’ track:
Saddleback 78, El Modena 57--Robbie Price won the mile in 4:25 and then won the two mile in 9:50.6 to lead host Saddleback.
Fountain Valley 82 1/2, Newport Harbor 52 1/2--Fred Siino jumped 21 feet 2 1/4 inches to lead host Fountain Valley. Newport Harbor’s Tony Mancuso’s shot put went 51-1 1/2.
Woodbridge 84.5, University 45, Irvine 40.5--Frank Smith of Woodbridge won the long jump (21-6), anchored the 440 relay (44.2), won the 100 meters (11.1) and the triple jump (42-3). Woodbridge is 2-1, University 1-2 and host Irvine 0-3.
In an Angelus League girls’ track meet:
Mater Dei 91, St. Paul 27--Kelly Flathers won the mile, the two-mile and was the anchor of the winning mile relay team for visiting Mater Dei.
In nonleague girls’ track:
Woodbridge 78, Irvine 44, University 33--Woodbridge’s Michelle Muniz won the 200 meters in 26.0. Other top performers for the Warriors: Kaci Keffer won the 400 meters (58.9); Amy Robles won the 800 (2:21.6) and 1,600 (5:12.5), and Cathi Peck won the 3,200 (11:28.7), was second (2:23.4) in the 800 and third (5:13.5) in the 1,600. University’s Tanya Brix was second (5:13.3) in the 1,600.
Sonora 98, Anaheim 28--Casie Lazano won the 100 (11.76) and the long jump (16-5 3/4) for Sonora.
Tustin 93, Westminster 34--Brandi Cohen of Tustin threw the discus 111-7 for Tustin.
Huntington Beach 83, Estancia 43--Despite losing, Estancia had several good performances. Debbie Hargrove threw the discus 117-8 1/2 and the shot put 34-3 1/2; Nichole Oberreuter threw the shot put 35-6 1/2, and Christie Howard went 5-2 in the high jump.
In a nonscoring meet between Capistrano Valley and Corona del Mar:
John Allen of Capistrano Valley won the discus at 160 feet, and the shot put at 50-3 3/4. Tyson Jacobsen jumped 14 feet in the pole vault and Bernie Chapman won the triple jump (44-9 1/2) for Capistrano Valley.
Sarah Toomey won the long jump with a leap of 18 1/4 for Capistrano Valley.
