Amazon Theater Stages First Opera Since 1907: The Teatro Amazonas opened its doors to Brazil’s high society for its first opera in more than 80 years. But few natives of the Amazon were invited to the festivities Saturday night, and contrasting with the serene atmosphere of the newly restored opera house was a protest taking place outside. About 400 artists from Manaus, the Amazonian capital, complained that only one local artist was invited to perform on opening night. Thirty protesters were arrested. Many of Brazil’s rich and famous were there, though Brazil’s newly elected president, Fernando Collor de Mello, was not.
