COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Flener Shuts Down Wisconsin on Four Hits, 4-0
Huck Flener pitched a four-hitter to lead Cal State Fullerton to a 4-0 victory over Wisconsin in a nonconference baseball game Sunday at Fullerton.
Flener, a junior left-hander, struck out seven and walked one. He is 4-1 for Fullerton (12-9).
The Titans scored twice in the first inning, once in the fourth and once in the seventh.
In the first inning, Fullerton’s Phil Nevin had an RBI triple and scored on Rich Gonzales’ squeeze bunt. Gonzales walked and scored on an error in the fourth, and David Ayala added an RBI single in the seventh.
Lance Painter (0-3) took the loss for Wisconsin (2-11).
In nonconference softball:
Cal State Fullerton 5, Bowling Green 0--Missy Coombes had a two-run double and a sacrifice fly for host Fullerton (19-8).
Cal State Fullerton 3, Rutgers 0--Ann Van Dortrecht pitched three innings in relief, striking out all nine batters she faced, for the save.
In nonconference men’s tennis:
Kentucky 5, UC Irvine 4--Andy Potter and Scott Hulse of Kentucky defeated Casten Hoffmann and Mike Roberts, 7-6, 6-4, to clinch the match for the visiting Wildcats.
Kentucky led, 4-2, after singles play, but Irvine’s Trevor Kronemann and Richard Lubner won, 6-3, 7-6, at No. 1 doubles, and Shige Kanroji and Neel Grover won, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 3 doubles to tie the score, 4-4.
Kronemann won, 6-3, 6-2, and Lubner won, 7-5, 7-6, in singles for Irvine.
In nonconference women’s tennis:
Washington 6, Cal State Fullerton 3--Kelli Moore won, 6-2, 6-1, and Roseann Alva won, 6-1, 6-2, in singles for host Fullerton. Moore and Alva then combined in doubles to win, 6-2, 6-7, 6-2.
