WORLD : Protest Sparks Ethnic Clash
TIRGU MURES, Romania — About 2,000 Romanians armed with scythes and clubs attacked 5,000 ethnic Hungarian protesters today in the Transylvanian town of Tirgu Mures, killing one man and injuring about 60, a hospital spokesman said.
The Romanians charged at the Hungarians and drove them from the central square where they had occupied the town hall.
Witnesses saw Hungarians being clubbed to the ground, and Arad Kovacs, an official of the Hungarian Democratic Union party, said: “I am afraid this is going to be a horrible night.”
Police did not intervene during the heaviest clashes between the rival communities since trouble started last Friday.
