NIT ROUNDUP : Penn State Eliminates Maryland, 80-78
Confusion over the score in the closing seconds helped Penn State defeat Maryland, 80-78, in the second round of the National Invitation Tournament at State College, Pa., Monday.
With 34 seconds left, Maryland’s Jerrod Mustaf sunk what appeared to be a game-tying three-point shot and the scoreboard read, 78-78.
The shot was actually ruled a two-point basket, but the scoreboard didn’t reflect the correct score until 16 seconds remained and Maryland (19-14) didn’t notice the change for another six seconds.
The Terrapins (23-8) fouled Freddie Barnes, who hit two free throws with five seconds left.
Vanderbilt 89, Tennessee 85--Derrick Wilcox scored 26 points and the Commodores (18-14) rallied from a 17-point deficit at Nashville, Tenn.
Rutgers 81, Fordham 74--Keith Hughes scored 28 points and Daryl Smith’s three-point play with 31 seconds left gave the Scarlet Knights (18-16) the lead for good at Piscataway, N.J.
New Orleans 65, Mississippi State 60--At New Orleans, Tony Harris scored 22 points to lead the Privateers (21-10).
