Ricardo Pelaez’s first-half goal gave Mexico a 2-1 victory over World Cup participant Uruguay at the Coliseum on Tuesday night.
Mexico, banned from 1990 World Cup competition for using ineligible players, survived a second-period rally from Uruguay in a game played before 19,273 spectators.
Mexico’s first goal came three minutes into the game when Jorge Davalos headed in a corner kick by Alfonso Sosa. Sosa assisted on a goal six minutes later, taking a pass from Manuel Negrete and serving the ball to Ricardo Pelaez, who kicked the ball past Uruguayan goalkeeper Fernando Alvez.
