Schabarum Assailed for Not Endorsing Deputy
A coalition of Latino county employee groups charged Wednesday that Los Angeles County Supervisor Pete Schabarum’s decision not to endorse his long-time aide Sarah Flores for his board seat was the latest example of his insensitivity toward Latinos and women.
But Raul Nunez, president of the 2,000-member Chicano Employees Assn., said his group will not make an endorsement in the 10-candidate race until the conclusion of a trial on a federal court lawsuit accusing the supervisors of violating the voting rights of Latinos.
“If anyone in that office was qualified to teach Mr. Schabarum about the workings of a supervisorial office, it was Sarah,” Nunez said, noting that Flores worked for Schabarum’s predecessor when Schabarum took office in 1972.
Schabarum, who endorsed Superior Court Judge Gregory O’Brien Jr. in the June 5, election, has said that if he was anti-Latino or anti-woman, he would not have promoted Flores from a secretary to his assistant chief deputy.
