Ivie Leads Trojans Past Ohio State
Bryan Ivie had 22 kills as the USC men’s volleyball team defeated Ohio State, 15-7, 15-7, 16-14, before a crowd of 800 Wednesday night at Edison High School.
Ivie, a 6-foot-7 outside hitter who played for the U.S. National team last summer, also had three blocks for the top-ranked Trojans (14-1).
Middle blocker Jason Perkins, a former standout at Corona del Mar High School, had seven kills and eight blocks for the Trojans, who defeated Ohio State for the 13th consecutive time.
Middle blocker David Frette had 13 kills and five blocks to lead Ohio State (6-18).
USC led, 12-6, in the final game when Trojan Coach Jim McLaughlin pulled his starters. Ohio State rallied to tie the score, 14-14, but a hitting error by Frette and a kill by USC’s Pete Leimbach ended the match.
In the preliminary game, Mira Costa High School rallied from a 12-8 deficit in the final game to defeat Edison, 16-14, 15-10, 12-15, 13-15, 15-12. Edison, ranked No. 3 in Orange County, dropped to 4-1.
