COUNTYWIDE : Supplemental Tax Bills Being Mailed

Supplemental tax bills are being mailed to new homeowners this week to prevent them from incurring penalities for previous owners’ unpaid property taxes, county officials announced.

“It sure makes my life easier,” said Harold S. Pittman, county treasurer and tax collector. “We can keep people from calling our office and being unhappy, and with very little effort from us.”

State law requires only that the tax collector send out one notice with two stubs for tax bills to be paid twice a year, Pittman said. But if the home seller or escrow company does not disclose the pending tax bill at the time of sale, the buyer accrues penalties on the unpaid bill.

Pittman said it is much easier to send the reminders to new homeowners. Pittman began sending the supplemental bills out last year.
