HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL : Steal of Home Lifts Escondido; Ippolito Stars
Steve Carr singled in the tying run and stole home for the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the sixth as Escondido defeated visiting University City, 8-7, in a nonleague baseball game Friday.
Escondido had trailed, 7-2, going into the inning but scored six runs. Freshman Mike Frank had the big hit in the inning, his two-run double pulling Escondido (3-5) to within 7-6. Carr then singled in Frank to tie the game, went to second on the throw home, was sacrificed to third and stole home.
In other nonconference games:
Helix 9, Serra 3--Rob Ippolito struck out 17 and hit a grand slam for Helix (4-2-1). Ippolito’s 17 strikeouts ties him for fourth with nine others on the single-game all-time section list. He also had a sacrifice fly and finished with five RBIs.
USDHS 8, Clairemont 1--USDHS scored in five of the six innings in which it batted and easily won at home. Sean Nugent was three for four, and Ryan Walker and Gavin Millay had two RBIs apiece for USDHS (6-2).
Oceanside 5, Hood River (Ore.) 3--Brian Harte struck out 12, but it wasn’t enough for visiting Hood River. Andrew Acevedo was two for three for Oceanside (6-2-1).
Coastal League
Julian 4, Mountain Empire 2--Travis Denmark struck out 15 and was two for two with two doubles for Julian (6-0, 1-0). Denmark (4-0) has 57 strikeouts in 25 innings. Curtis Delgadillo had a bases-empty home run in the seventh for Julian.
Santa Fe Christian 6, Army-Navy 2--Alex Boshaw struck out 10, and Burley Phillips was two for three with two RBIs for Santa Fe Christian (1-5, 1-0). Army-Navy is 2-3 and 0-2.
