THE SIDELINES : Suspects in Witt Robbery Held
From Times Wire Services
EAST BERLIN — East German police arrested two men in the theft of jewelry worth $60,000 stolen from the home of Olympic figure-skating champion Katarina Witt, the official ADN news agency reported Monday.
But it said the police had found no trace of the jewels, stolen earlier this month from Witt’s bungalow near the town of Eberswalde.
Witt, 24, is one of many East German sporting stars fiercely criticized for privileges they enjoyed under the hard-line Communist government ousted last autumn.
