PREP BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Santa Ana Valley Rolls 11 in the Fifth, Routs Santa Ana, 11-3
Santa Ana Valley High School sent 17 batters to the plate and scored 11 runs in the fifth inning of an 11-3 victory over Santa Ana in a Century League baseball game Tuesday at Santa Ana Valley.
In the fifth inning, Mike Murtuagh had two hits and four runs batted in for Santa Ana Valley. He had a three-run triple and an RBI single. His triple gave Santa Ana Valley a 3-2 lead.
In the sixth inning, Alex Alvardo, a pinch-hitter, had a three-run triple, Scott Strong had a single, a double and an RBI, and Scott Crosby had an RBI double for Santa Ana Valley (5-5, 2-2).
In other Century League games:
Canyon 9, Villa Park 0--Lee Torres hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning to give Canyon a 5-0 lead and the Comanches scored four more runs in the inning. Torres also had a single and a triple and scored twice in the game. Jeff Brunswig had a single, a triple and three RBIs, and Mike Casagranda (3-0) struck out seven, walked one and allowed three hits in six innings for Canyon (5-5, 4-0).
Foothill 7, El Modena 2--John Scardino (2-3) pitched seven innings, allowing four hits, for visiting Foothill (5-5,2-2). Bryan Palluck had two hits, two RBIs, scored two runs and Kent Donnelly hit a two-run home run for Foothill.
In the Pacific Coast League:
Laguna Hills 8, Trabuco Hills 5--Jeramy Gillen hit a three-run home run in the second inning to give visiting Laguna Hills a 4-0 lead, but Trabuco Hills scored four in the third to tie the score. Matt Maffei hit a two-run home run in the fourth for Laguna Hills (7-4, 4-0). Kevin Lovingier (6-0) struck out nine and allowed three hits. Lovingier also had three hits.
Orange 6, Laguna Beach 5--Visiting Orange rallied for five runs in the sixth inning to take a 6-5 lead. Richard Prater had a solo home run to start Orange’s sixth-inning rally. Chris Thompson had a two-run double and Jason Smith had a squeeze bunt to break a 5-5 tie. Josh Bolovsky (1-2) pitched four innings, striking out eight, for the victory. Ruben Hernandez pitched the seventh for the save.
Woodbridge 5, Costa Mesa 1--Tim Kingsberry had two hits and two RBIs and Gary Fishel, Justin Drizos, and Kent Audibert had RBI singles for Woodbridge. Fishel (3-1) allowed four hits and had six strikeouts in seven innings for the victory.
In the Olympic League:
Orange Lutheran 1, Ontario Christian 0--Kent Dowding (3-1) had 11 strikeouts and allowed two hits for host Orange Lutheran (6-3, 2-1). Doug Senne walked, stole second, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a bunt single by Philip Matheson.
Whittier Christian 21, Santa Margarita 2--Brent Tucker went three for four with a double, a home run and four RBIs, David Zamorano went two for four with a double, a home run and three RBIs and Steve Little went three for three with a double and three RBIs for host Whittier Christian (7-1, 3-0). Todd Wilson (4-0) struck out six and walk three.
In the Sunset League:
Marina 2, Fountain Valley 1--Robin Lindsey singled in Jeremy Preall and Marc Newfield later scored on a wild pitch in the third inning for visiting Marina. Sean Connors (1-1) allowed a run in the fourth and was relieved by Preall with one out in the fifth. Preall earned the save for Marina (4-6-1, 2-2). Fountain Valley is 4-7, 1-3.
Ocean View 2, Edison 1--Gil Gonzales scored on a passed ball in the first and on a grounder in the sixth for visiting Ocean View (9-2, 4-0). Duane Page (4-0) pitched five innings for the victory and Jimmy Gwaltney worked the final two innings for the save.
Huntington Beach 8, Westminster 1--Ryan Marlin had three hits and two RBIs and Kenny Mays (3-2) struck out five and allowed five hits for visiting Huntington Beach (8-5, 3-1).
In the Arrowhead League:
Southern California Christian 12, Sherman Indian 11--Nathan Lambie had three hits, including an RBI double in the seventh, as host Southern California Christian (3-2, 2-0) scored three runs for the victory.
