GARDEN GROVE : Strawberry Parade Changing Channels

This year’s telecast of the Garden Grove Strawberry Festival parade will go on as scheduled but on a different channel and with what’s expected to be a smaller audience.

The Garden Grove City Council voted 5-0 this week to appropriate $22,000 as the city’s contribution to the May 26 telecast on KDOC Channel 56, an independent commercial UHF station based in Anaheim. The Strawberry Festival Assn. will pay the balance. Total costs are estimated at $30,000 to $40,000.

The parade is a highlight of the annual four-day Memorial Day weekend activities that attract an estimated 300,000 visitors. The association and local nonprofit groups use the festival carnival to raise money.

In recent years, the parade was televised on Channel 9, then KHJ now KCAL, but the station changed ownership in the past year and the new management decided against televising the parade, said Jerry Margolin, president of the Strawberry Festival Assn.
