PREP BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Zingali’s Two-Hitter Paces Garden Grove to Victory
Shawn Zingali pitched a two-hitter and struck out 13 to lead Garden Grove High School to a 8-0 victory over visiting Bolsa Grande in a Garden Grove League baseball game Wednesday.
Zingali (2-2) didn’t allow a hit until the sixth inning when Luis Cerda singled with two outs.
D.J Johnson had three hits, scored three runs and hit two bases-empty home runs for Garden Grove (3-6, 1-2). Bolsa Grande is 2-6-1, 0-3.
In other Garden Grove League games:
Kennedy 6, La Quinta 2--Scott Jones pitched a two-hitter and had a bases-empty home run in the second inning for host Kennedy (5-5, 3-0). Todd Murakami had a bases-loaded double in the fourth inning to give Kennedy a 3-2 lead. Kennedy scored four runs in the fourth after trailing, 2-1.
Pacifica 19, Los Amigos 1--Kurt Hertzen had four hits, including a home run and two RBIs; Mark Flatten had two hits and four RBIs and Chris Shockley had three hits and two RBIs for Pacifica (6-5, 1-2). Jeff Wozniak also hit a home run for Pacifica. Robert Toth (4-2) allowed three hits over five innings for the victory.
Santiago 10, Rancho Alamitos 2--Mike Kissell (4-0) allowed two hits and had four strikeouts in five innings for visiting Santiago (9-4, 3-0). Enele Scanlan and Rick Paniagua each had three hits and an RBI for Santiago.
In the Angelus League:
St. Paul 3, Servite 2--Steve Sandoval had three hits for visiting Servite (7-4, 1-2).
In the Orange League:
Valencia 4, Western 2--Steve Rewald (3-0) pitched a seven-hitter and struck out seven to lead host Valencia (6-3, 2-2). Rewald had two hits, including a two-run home run in the fourth inning. Tito Reyes hit a two-run home run in the first inning for Valencia.
Magnolia 5, Brea-Olinda 4--Chad Phillips’ sacrifice fly scored Rece Hernandez in the fifth inning for the winning run for Magnolia (4-5, 3-1). Hernandez had two hits, including a triple to set up the winning run, and scored two runs. John Straits (1-1) allowed five hits, struck out 11 and walked one.
In the South Coast League:
Dana Hills 5, Capistrano Valley 2--Aaron Kokx hit a three-run home run to break a 1-1 tie in the third inning for host Dana Hills (7-4, 3-1). Brent Holstein (2-0) pitched four innings for the victory. John Spaulding pitched the final three innings, allowing no hits, for the save. Capistrano Valley is 0-3-1 in league play.
Mission Viejo 3, Irvine 1--Tim Snowden and Rick Marian each had two hits and one RBI for Mission Viejo (4-3-2, 2-1-1). Mike Seal struck 10 for Irvine, which is 3-1 in league. Don Disbro (1-0) got the victory in relief.
El Toro 6, San Clemente 3--Reggie Watkins and Chad Hoelker each drove in two runs to lead host El Toro (6-5, 2-2). Rob Johnson (2-1) pitched a six-hitter for the victory.
In the Empire League:
El Dorado 7, Cypress 3--Brian Loyd hit a bases-empty home run in the fourth for host El Dorado (6-3, 1-3). Bruce Torkelson had a run-scoring double in the fifth to tie the score, 3-3. Tyson Dowdell (2-1) pitched six innings for the victory.
Esperanza 8, Katella 2--David Newhan had two hits and three RBIs and Keith MacDonald had two hits and two RBIs to lead host Esperanza (8-2, 4-0). Brandon Farley had a two-run home run for Katella.
Los Alamitos 13, Loara 11--Visiting Los Alamitos scored six runs in the sixth inning to take a 12-8 lead. Tony Napolitano had three hits, including a home run, for Los Alamitos (4-0 in league play). Chris Hoffman had two home runs and four RBIs for Loara (2-9, 1-3).
