Purchasing Managers See Gains: The National Assn. of Purchasing Management, which tracks economic trends by polling its members, said its overall index rose to 48.8% in March from 48.3% the previous month. A reading below 50 indicates the manufacturing economy generally is declining; above 50, that it generally is expanding. The March index was at its highest level since June’s 48.8% reading, due to an increase in production and new export orders, the Tempe, Ariz.-based trade group said.
