NATION : Vt. Gov. Won’t Seek 4th Term
MONTPELIER, Vt. — Vermont Gov. Madeleine M. Kunin announced today she will not seek a fourth term as governor.
“It is time for me to move on to new challenges,” the governor said this morning as she revealed her decision.
Kunin, a Democrat who is the state’s first woman governor, said she is proud of her years in office. “We have made history here in Vermont,” she said. “We have shown that women are strong and capable leaders.”
The decision immediately gave front-runner status to former Gov. Richard Snelling, a Republican who was Kunin’s predecessor.
The most likely Democratic candidates are Lt. Gov. Howard Dean and former state Sen. Peter Welch.
