P.M. BRIEFING : Mitsubishi Shuns Role in Jet Pact
TOKYO — Japan’s Mitsubishi Group does not plan to take part in a jet-engine production pact forged by Pratt & Whitney of the United States and West Germany’s Daimler-Benz, a Mitsubishi Heavy Industries official said today.
“We have not even held any talks and have no schedule for talks,” the official said.
Daimler-Benz Chairman Edzard Reuter was quoted by West Germany’s Handelsblatt newspaper today as saying it is conceivable that Mitsubishi will participate in the Daimler-Pratt agreement
Last week, Daimler said it will combine its aircraft-engine making activities, grouped in the Motoren-und-Turbinen-Union unit, with Pratt & Whitney, a division of United Technologies Corp. of Hartford, Conn., in a move that appeared to be aimed at improving their positions before the 1992 unification of European markets.
