Manhattan Beach to Honor Manager

Manhattan Beach will honor City Manager David J. Thompson at a dinner next week to mark his retirement from a post he’s held for 16 years. He’s scheduled to leave the job May 1.

The City Council is interviewing candidates to replace Thompson and may name his replacement as early as next week.

Thompson, 60, has been city manager since 1974. In a recent interview, he said the highlight of his tenure was supervising the transformation in the late 1970s of a 187-acre Chevron U.S.A. Inc. tank farm into the complex that includes the Manhattan Village Mall, 540 homes and the Raddison Hotel.

The $38 dinner is April 14 at 6:30 p.m. at the Raddison. People are asked to sign up by Friday by calling the city Administrative and Community Services Department at 545-5621, Ext. 362.
