WORLD : 12 Die in Punjab Terrorist Blast
NEW DELHI — A bomb set by suspected Sikh militants today ripped through a bus in Haryana state, killing at least 12 people and injuring 42 others just minutes after the lower house of Parliament voted to extend federal rule of Punjab, police said.
Police said the bomb exploded as passengers were getting off the bus in the main bus terminal in the Haryana town of Panipat, 30 miles north of New Delhi.
The 4:30 p.m. blast killed at least 12 people on the bus and injured 42 others, police said. Eighteen of the wounded were reported hospitalized in serious condition.
Police said they suspect the bombing was the work of the Babbar Khalsa, a Sikh extremist group blamed by authorities for two blasts Tuesday in the Punjab city of Batala and a nearby village that killed 39 people.
