Japan Warships Leave Base for Pacific Exercise
TOKYO — A flotilla of Japanese warships left the Yokosuka naval base south of Tokyo on Friday to take part in a U.S.-led Pacific Rim exercise with the navies of South Korea, Canada and Australia.
A spokesman for Japan’s Defense Agency said eight destroyers and a supply ship left Yokosuka for waters between Hawaii and California. A submarine put to sea about a week ago.
A total of about 50 ships and 50,000 men will take part in the multilateral fleet maneuvers from late April to June. Japan has been participating in the Pacific naval exercise, held once every two years, since 1980.
