Spill Closes Waterway Between N.Y., Newark

NEWARK, N.J. — About 1,500 gallons of a lightweight petroleum distillate spilled into a busy waterway between New York and New Jersey on Friday morning, closing it to traffic, officials said.
The liquid, naphtha, has the consistency of lighter fluid and was expected to evaporate rapidly, said Lt. Cmdr. Paul Milligan at Coast Guard headquarters on Governor’s Island, N.Y.
