NATION : Bush Picks Philippine Negotiator
WASHINGTON — President Bush today appointed Richard Armitage, a former Defense Department official and an expert on Asian-Pacific affairs, to be special U.S. negotiator for talks on the future of American bases in the Philippines.
The United States is seeking to repair strained relations with President Corazon Aquino’s government.
Armitage, 45, served six years as assistant secretary of defense for international security affairs.
Exploratory talks on the future of Subic Bay Naval Station and Clark Air Force Base, two of the largest American military installations outside the United States, are scheduled to begin May 14, according to the Defense Department.
