OVER THE BOARDWALK: Pole-vaulting may be dying at many Orange County high schools (C8), but Los Alamitos High assistant track coach David Johnston has a gimmick he hopes will promote the sport. . . . Capitalizing on the popularity of beach volleyball, Johnson has devised “beach-vaulting”--pole- vaulters sprinting down a wooden runway on the sand. . . . The spectacle is planned for June 17 in Manhattan Beach. Johnston foresees sponsors and TV coverage--and maybe even raise enough money for a pole-vault training center in Orange County.
