LOCAL : $5.5-Million Fire at Cable Firm
An $5.5-million fire at a West Los Angeles cable television company’s offices knocked out service to about 18,000 customers early this morning.
The fire gutted the offices of Continental Cable Co. on Arizona Circle and destroyed the company’s adjacent transmission facility, which company Vice President John Gibbs described as “the nerve center and brain” of the company’s cable service.
City Fire Department officials estimated damage at $500,000 to the building and $5 million to its contents, mostly electronic equipment. No one was in the building and no injuries were reported. The cause of the 2 a.m. fire was under investigation.
About 18,000 customers awoke to find only snow on their television sets. The outage affected households in Westchester, Lennox, Ladera Heights, View Park and Windsor Hills.
