California IN BRIEF : VENTURA COUNTY : Fire Sweeps Across Los Padres Forest

More than 250 firefighters are battling a 500-acre fire near Bear Mountain in Los Padres National Forest in Ventura County. Investigators were trying to learn what sparked the blaze, which began burning in heavy brush Friday and spread west toward Alamo Mountain, said Juanita Freel, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Forestry Service. Fire danger is the most severe in a century in the national forest because of the four-year statewide drought, she said.
