THE SIDELINES : 3 Californians on Marathon Team
INDIANAPOLIS — Three California runners--Linda Somers, Rosa Gutierrez and Leslie Lewis--were named today by the Athletics Congress to the U.S. women’s marathon team for this summer’s Goodwill Games.
The men’s marathon team will be announced later, said TAC, governing body for track and field in the United States. The rest of the U.S. track and field team will be chosen at the U.S. championships at Cerritos College in Norwalk on June 14-16.
Somers of Davis was second at the California International meet in December, which served as the U.S. women’s marathon championship. The winner of that race, Nan Davis, declined a berth on the marathon team for the Goodwill Games in order to concentrate on qualifying in the 10,000-meter run, TAC said.
Gutierrez of San Jose and Lewis of Torrance were selected by the TAC women’s long-distance running committee based on their performances in meets from last June through March of this year, TAC said.
