Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Starlight Express” grossed a total of $1,598,884 for 16 performances from April 3 through 15 at the Orange County Performing Arts Center and averaged 99% of capacity for the entire run, with 13 sellouts, a Center spokesman said Monday.
The second-week gross of $842,817 set a new one-week record for a Broadway revival, the spokesman said. The former record of $804,439 was set by “Cats,” another Lloyd Webber musical, during its third engagement at the Center from Sept. 5 through 10, 1989.
“Starlight” established those record numbers despite the fact that 164 seats of the Center’s 2,996-seat hall had to be taken out to accommodate the show’s technical requirements, causing the loss of 2,600 seats for the entire run. The Center compensated by raising the top ticket price to $45, from the customary $40.
