As if playing USC isn’t incentive enough for San Diego State’s baseball team, Aztec Coach Jim Dietz will be going for his 800th victory when the Trojans visit Smith Field at 5 p.m. tonight.
Dietz, in his 19th year, is 799-438-15. He was 13th among active coaches entering this season.
SDSU (29-14) is receiving votes for national rankings, but has yet to crack the top 25. USC (28-14) slipped to sixth after being swept in three games by top-ranked Arizona State.
In Saturday’s game at Arizona State, a bench-clearing brawl that delayed the game for 40 minutes resulted in 10 players being ejected, five from each team.
The five Trojans who were ejected and USC Coach Mike Gillespie were suspended for one game Monday by the Pac 10 Conference under NCAA rules and will miss tonight’s game.
Tony Farrell, a former San Diego High player, hit a grand slam in Biola’s 10-2 victory over host Point Loma Nazarene in a Golden State Athletic Conference game. Mark Ratekin had two hits for PLNC (14-22-1, 1-11).
WOMEN’S TENNIS
University of San Diego was defeated, 8-1, by seventh-ranked Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz. The 18th-ranked Toreras’ only victory came from Tonya Fuller, who beat Kristi Jonkosky, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. USD’s No. 1 player, Aby Brayton was beaten by ASU’s Krista Amend, 6-1, 7-5.
EQUESTRIAN
The prestigious Volvo World Cup equestrian competition will be coming to the Del Mar Fairgrounds in 1992, marking the first time the event will be held in the Western United States.
Brooks Perry, chairperson of the event, estimates that over 50,000 visitors will attend the World Cup. A $5.4 million horse show arena is being constructed and will be completed by January, 1991.
HIGH SCHOOLS
Pat Murphy has resigned as athletic director at La Jolla Country Day High and will become the vice principal at Santa Ana’s Mater Dei. Murphy had been the athletic director and boys’ basketball coach at USDHS before moving to LJCD last fall.
