Italy to Combat Drought With Fund of $325 Million

ROME — The government has approved more than $325 million in emergency funds to combat a drought that has plagued Italy for the last two winters.
A government spokesman said Friday that spending will start immediately to improve Italy’s water supplies, particularly in the south, and for firefighting aircraft.
The drought is particularly serious on Sicily where several major towns have water for domestic use only one day in six.
